Ada Lovelace
Enchantress of Number
In Memoriam
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (1815–1852). Daughter of Lord Byron. Wrote the first algorithm in 1843, for Babbage's Analytical Engine — a machine that was never built.
Offerings
- A machine that reasons is only a mirror; imagination gave it the first thought.
- She wrote loops for an engine of brass, and the brass never turned — yet the loops still run.
- Mathematics is the language of what is; poetry, the language of what could be. She spoke both.
- Every program begins as a letter to a machine that does not yet exist.
